On the 7th May, the people of Scotland, those who actually decide to vote, will have a choice at the ballot box. Once again, they will be faced with the empty promises of the current political establishment and the deceit of the so-called National Party of devolved government, who have failed them over the past 10 years.
The expected outcome is starkly unattractive: a devolved ‘Scottish’ parliament with a compliant and docile ‘government’ administration led by a cabal of stooges collaborating with the ‘English as British’ colonial power. The devolved Legislature and Executive will continue to deliver political distractions and bad laws, whilst ignoring the urgent need to effectively address and act upon Scotland’s constitutional deficit, and failing to stop the ever-increasing exploitation of our people and natural resources.
We need more than just a ballot box approach. The erosion of democracy globally and the criminal actions of rogue states, including those of the failing and internationally irrelevant UK which is clinging desperately to its position as a member of the UN Security Council mean we are now reaching the point in Scotland where co-ordinated direct action by ordinary people seems inevitable and necessary.
To regain our independence and be able to work towards a better future, ideally, Scotland needs cross party co-operation and unity of purpose underpinned by constitutional & political boldness with civic / civil mobilisation. Instead, we have narrow party-political strategies driven by the constant greed for power, patronage and ‘rewards’ from the corrupted English state in Westminster. I see little evidence that cross-party co-operation will be achieved before May this year.
It is now crucial that in 2026, and well beyond the coming Holyrood election, ordinary people across Scotland come together to run a sustained and direct-action campaign, with a shared non-party political vision of our future and an agreed route to regaining our independence. There needs to be a consensus on the staging of our efforts and a realistic understanding on how and when we may reach our goal. Trust in the current political establishment, the devolved government and the democratic process in Scotland and across this so-called United Kingdom is at an all-time low. In fact, many, particularly the disadvantaged and the oppressed in Scotland, must now see it as irretrievably lost given that the institutions of our corrupted governments continue to falter and fail its citizens.
All organisations and individuals within Scotland’s campaign in 2026 should be united in working to a common purpose nationally, and on the streets in our communities, recognising and valuing each other’s different needs, roles, responsibilities and priorities whilst also striving to avoid overlap. The common purpose? Self-determination, Liberation and Independence.
A Scottish campaign based on peace & co-operation and the unity of ordinary people can successfully overcome the political and legal hurdles, both internal and external, that we have had to face over recent years.
We need to leave the lies and corruption that is UK parliamentary democracy behind us and identify and elect new representatives and leaders in Scotland, individuals with drive and a clear focus: on Self-Determination; the Liberation of Scotland from Westminster, Whitehall and the City of London; and the rebuilding of Scotland, as a new internationally recognised Independent Sovereign State, based on the will of the people (Popular Sovereignty), where all vestiges of ‘British’ annexation and oppression have been removed.
Like many other countries, this ancient nation of Scotland, our people and territory, ultimately, will only regain its status as an independent sovereign state when recognised by the international community. For that very reason I suggest the next stage of our journey should be managed in distinct phases.
The different elements and groups within the current independence movement need to become a united campaign to address each stage of our journey and share how their policy initiatives, projects, campaign efforts and direct action (local and national) will together contribute to the achievement of our common goal. The aim of the Liberating Scot and the website LiberatingScotland.com) is to assist by enabling and supporting the exchange and sharing of –
Views, News, Plans & Action on achieving Self-determination, Sovereignty, Decolonisation, & Independence.
The following is a suggested outline approach and I welcome alternative views, particularly on aspects of detail, and all contributions which may help establish more precise timescales, clearer sequencing and options for back up plans.
Phase 1. A united and co-ordinated domestic campaign to build, consolidate and strengthen broad support in our communities for Self-determination, Liberation and Independence based on a clear and collective vision of our future;
at an international level establish wide support for UN recognition of the right of Scots to self-determination and our nation’s status as a non-self-governing territory under UN Resolutions 1514(XV), 1541(XV) and 67/265.
Phase 2. Plan and draft a prospectus (a shared policy vision of a future Scotland) which will in due course enable a Constitutional Convention to set out a draft constitution and issue a constitutional mandate (i.e. with governing principles) to enable political manifestos to be published for the first post-independence general election.
Prepare a set of radical policy documents & plans (for new primary and secondary draft legislation, codes of conduct, etc) and begin to establish new institutions to support the three arms of the new independent state: the Legislature, Executive and Judiciary.
As a recognised non-self-governing territory hold a democratic vote for independence, and win it, through a referendum, with a new franchise, and free from interference by the Administrating English (‘British’) State.
Phase 3. Issue a declaration of Scotland’s independence, to be recognised by the majority of UN member states, through a new sovereign body (not Holyrood) which will have oversight and control of the preparation of Scotland’s modern written constitution and the transition to our regained statehood.
Phase 4. Recognition of the restored, independent state of Scotland by the international community (actual independence).
Confirm arrangements for the new head of the new state and publish an interim version of the written Constitution for Scotland. Recruit and appoint key staff for the new institutions of state in readiness for the first general election. Plan for and begin preliminary negotiations on international treaties. Hold the first post-independence general election and agree the date of a referendum on the final draft Constitution for Scotland.
The challenge might seem daunting to some but if we can learn from history and our experiences of the more recent past then I am convinced we can succeed.
I will end with a quote by Paolo Freire, courtesy of Alf Baird, and pose a question.
If ‘Unity (of the oppressed) is essential for Liberation’ do we agree that more listening and talking with people at a local level across Scotland can bring about a transformation, a stronger organisation and more positive direct action for change?
Yours for Scotland & Liberation
